Employment Licences / Work Permits
in Malta
In view of Malta's relative small
size, being an island of a mere 390 sq. Km in size, the Maltese Government has
found it necessary to impose immigration regulations to protect the local labour
market against an excessive influx of foreign labour resources. A work
permit (employment licence) is therefore necessary for all foreigners (EU and
non-EU citizens) to take up employment in Malta. Malta has also negotiated
derogations from complete freedom of movement of persons for the first 7 years
of EU membership. As a result, the Maltese government may ONLY refuse work
permits to EU Citizens until 2010 IF granting such permits would cause a strain
on the local labour market.
Entry Visas
Non-EU citizens from
some countries that do not have a free movement agreement with Malta may also
require an entry visa. A list of countries which have a free movement
agreement with Malta is available at
www.foreign.gov.mt.
Our Work Permit application &
annual renewal service
As part of our business relocation
service, we advise companies intending to set up in Malta and private
individuals seeking employment in Malta on the practical implications of the
applicable local laws,
principally Chapter 217 of the Laws of Malta (the Immigration Act of 1970) and
Legal Notice 205 of 2004 (the Immigration Regulations of 2004).
Since the current work permit procedures can
prove to be very complex and
time-consuming, our Work Permits Unit is also able to assist by taking over the
responsibility of processing the documentation for work permit applications and
annual renewals for a fixed fee.
